With our second noob on the way this May, I’ve been rereading many of my parenting books with more intensity, attention and renewed trepidation. I feel like I’ve been living in the lap of luxury for the past two years with Noob Baby sleeping an average of 11 hrs at night! Did I just voluntarily sign up to sacrifice all that beauty sleep again?! And by “beauty sleep”… I mean SANITY sleep.
I thought this would be the perfect time to create a cheat sheet with all of the Baby Whisperer’s E.A.S.Y Schedules on one easy-to-reference page! Download and print the E.A.S.Y Cheat Sheet here. Be sure to Share, Like, Tweet, Pin, Email it to your heart’s content! I love having useful content shared!
The E.A.S.Y Cheat Sheet includes 4 schedules which span the ages of 4 weeks to about 1 year. Here are some tips to remember:
1. If you aren’t already familiar with the Baby Whisperer’s E.A.S.Y method, please visit my Parenting Tips section to read a detailed explanation:
2. These schedules are adapted from the The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems (Hogg and Blau). I’ve made a few minor adjustments based on my experience. So, you’ll see that bedtime might be between 7:30-8:00 (slightly different than what’s written in the book). I just figured that for most people, the bath and bedtime ritual is longer than the 30 minutes Hogg indicates.
3. These samples are simply guidelines of how you can structure your day. By no means are you supposed to be following these suggestions minute-to-minute. Do not feel like a failure if your day doesn’t go as planned! Flexibility is something that all parents learn sooner or later. Read more on what do When E.A.S.Y is Not So Easy.
4. Don’t stress about a schedule for babies under 2-3 months. Hogg clearly states that the first six weeks is a time of huge adjustment. In fact, Dr. Harvey Karp, author of The Happiest Baby on the Block, hypothesizes that babies ages 0-3 month are making up for their “Missing Fourth Trimester.” My advice is to go with the flow and just try to make baby as comfy as possible while he’s adjusting to life on Earth!
5. Follow your child’s cues, but use parental judgement. All the parenting experts I’ve read (Hogg, Karp, Ferber, Ezzo, Sears, Weissbluth, to name a few) agree that you should always be in tune with your child’s needs. So even though you may desperately want to have an organized schedule, babies certainly don’t understand that (and they just don’t give a crap). Again, be flexible but remember that you are the adult and parent. An infant doesn’t understand what’s best for him/her. If you aren’t establishing some predictability and structure by 3-4 months, you are setting yourself up for a lot of habit-breaking, fussiness and even poor eating and sleeping later on.
6. The last sample schedule goes up to about 1 year. After this age, the day doesn’t really lend itself to the E-A-S-Y pattern anymore. Generally, toddlers (1 yr+) take 1-2 naps and have 3 meals w/2 snacks a day. Preschoolers will usually take 1 nap a day (or drop naps completely by ages 3-4) and have 3 meals w/2 snacks a day.

This schedule is really good and helped me a lot but when u say snack bottle ( before solids) what do you mean by that ? Half the bottle he drinks usually? My baby just turned 5 month and she drinks usually 220 ml so I give her 150 ml as snack bottle and then after solid the remaining 60ml

Is the baby supposed to sleep through the night at 4 weeks? If not what should the schedule be?
Sunny says
thank you for all the helpful info on your site especially this handy dandy schedule (not to mention aesthetically pleasing). Just wondering though, I notice you don’t have a solid feed in the schedule for 6+ month. I’ve been doing this for the past two weeks since starting solids for our little one. She doesn’t seem as interested in solids in the morning after the morning breast feed. Was wondering if you did that until your babies were 1 year old and if it had any adverse effects? Thanks again!
Emily says
Love your schedule, I’m a Baby Wise follower so this is very similar. How do you structure your day at 10 months+? And do you breastfeed? I need to drop a feed soon to get down to the 3 a day since he’s eating all his meals well, however I’m afraid I’ll diminish my supply since I have to pump for his feeds at the sitter.

My little boy is 4 weeks and feeds every 4 hours how do I use one of these schedules as they feed every 3?
Ashley says
On your cheat sheet it says cat nap from 5-6pm, then eat at 7pm. What are they doing between 6 & 7pm?? Mine want to eat right after their cat nap but then that’s to early to be the last feed of the day??
Help!!

Hi! My son is now 10 weeks old and we have been working on his EASY schedule since he turned 4 weeks old. He wakes up at ~7-730am every morning. We were previously waking him up every 3 hours to eat, however, he consistently wants to sleep longer at his naps, sometimes hitting the 4 hour mark since his last feeding. One question I have that hasn’t been addressed in any blog I’ve read is whether or not I should wake him up from his naps or if I should let him wake up on his own. I have been doing a schedule like this the past 3 weeks:
7-7:30am wake up, feed
9am nap
11 am wake up, feed
12:30pm nap
2:30pm wake up, feed
4pm nap
5:30pm wake up, feed
6:45 pm nap
8 pm wake up, bed time routine
8:30 pm feed
9pm bed
3:30-4 am night feeding (sometimes he will sleep through this and not wake-up until morning which is 9.5 hours!)
Am I putting his to bed too late and maybe this is why he is taking such long naps during the day? If so, how do I get him onto a better schedule. Also, we have tried dreamfeeds and he doesn’t wake up enough to eat (bottle or breast) so this is one reason I am putting him to bed later to get that last feeding in. Should I give him a 4th nap, wake him up for his bedtime routine and then put him to bed for good at a later hour?
I go back to work in 2 weeks and I’m trying to really get a good routine for us all down pat before I have to go back to work. Any advice you have I would greatly appreciate!
Thanks! – Meghann

Is the first “feed” of the day milk or solids for a 6 month old. I notice the word bottle is used as well as solids, so I’m unsure what “feed” is. Thanks

Thank you Noobmommy for this spot on schedule. My son has been on it since he was 3-4 months. At 6 months, he wasn’t ready for that schedule but now at 7 months, we’re finding he’s pretty much on queue. I’ve read so many sites and its been pretty confusing to lock down something for us but this one made it really easy! Props!

Hi, I am a first time mom with a son who is now just turned 3 months. I am starting the EASY Schedule now but have some questions. I have a cat napper!!!!! As soon as 30 minutes hits he is up and hardly ever am I able to sooth him down again. Its a very long and stressful process. Do I keep him in the crib for the whole 1.5 hours? How? Will he eventually sleep longer or do I have a horrible napper?
I’m pretty sure its self soothing issues because he’s up 3-4 times a night (only really needing to feed twice). Is it supposed to be a battle to get him to sleep again after 4am or 5am? I find bringing him back to bed with me helps big time but I don’t want to continue any bad habits.
Sarah says
HI Sara,
I am also a first time mom. my LO (just about 3 months) is having a cat napping issue as well. At least yours will give you a 1/2 hour. I can barely pump before she wakes up again. She will go maybe 10 minutes. I think most of her issue is she loves the pacifier to fall asleep with. She has always been a baby who likes the sucking motion. However, when the pacifier falls out, if she isn’t in a deep enough sleep she will wake up and cry. So I end up running up and down the stairs several times to just put the pacifier back in and she’ll be out again. (until it falls out…). Did you ever get any advice on how to help the cat napping issue or anything? I know mine can get herself back to sleep because I’ve seen her doing it at night. She will often sleep from 10-3/4. Feeling so frustrated!
THanks!

Hi Sarah,
I know it’s been a while since this post was put up, but I was just wondering if you had any replies/solution for your daughters catnapping issue in the daytime? This sounds very much like what my month plus son is going through right now! He startled himself up every 10-15 minutes (30 if I’m lucky) during the daytime!

Just popped back here, after a while… Noob is now 1, sleeping through most nights in his crib in his room (its a big deal because i was sure he would still be waking up so often when he leaves for college!!) still having 2 naps, we still follow the EASY schedule thanks noob mummy.

PS, I remember the days when my little boy would do the same thing you describe…cat nap for 20 min or so and want to eat every 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. I was going out of my mind! I started actually putting him in his crib where it is quiet when there were signs he was tired, which was about 1 1/2 hrs after he got up from the last nap. I would feed him after he got up since it was time again. I did let him cry for a while until he went to sleep, but he eventually did it on his on. Most naps I had no prob, but afternoon naps were hit/miss. We moved his bedtime until we got it where he wouldn’t be up so early. He would wake at about 5 which was his only feeding of night at about 5 mths and I finally just put a passie in when he began to cry at five to see if it was habit or if he was hungry…he went back to sleep and that was beginning of no night feedings! My baby couldn’t go by easy schedule as well… he would scream too! Just hang in there and it will get better!

I am a first time mum to a beautiful baby boy. He had a traumatic birth with forceps and weighed only 5 lbs. He is going to be 5 months next Thursday and weighs 13 lbs. He is bottle fed with combination of enfamil ar and aptamil pepti on the recommendation by the pediatrician.I am struggling with his naps and night wakings. He takes 3-4 20 mins naps during day and wakes up 2-3 times on the night and struggles to go back to sleep after each waking. He has 150-180 ml in each feed. He feeds every 2-2 1/2 hrs during day.He also doesn’t play/stay by himself even for a few minutes. Even if I am within eyesight he would cry the house down. He is happy and content only if me or my husband are next to him or he is in our lap.We have a loose routine
7 am feed
9 – 9.15am sleep
9.30 feed
11.30 sleep (sometimes)
12.00 feed
1.30 sleep
2.30 feed
5 feed
5.30 sleep
7.00 bath every two days
7.30 – change – feed – bed
1.00 feed doesn’t settle back to sleep till 2
5 – 5.30 feed doesn’t settle back to sleep till 6 – 6.15
Awake at 7.00
I have tried to stretch the timings to 3 hrs by playing/walking/singing but screams the place down unless given milk.He doesn’t self settle as well. We have to sing/pat/rock him to sleep. He has dummy to help with sleep. We do go to mother and baby groups 3 times a week in the morning. I love him a lot but I don’t get time for myself at all. I am constantly with him and I have to cook/make calls etc during his 20 mins nap.
What am I doing wrong? What can I do to improve his naps and might time sleep? Do I follow 3 hourly routine or 4 hourly?
He is quite strong minded-when he wants milk nothing else will suffice. When he doesn’t want milk, he won’t take it however much I cox him.
I find it very hard to let him scream when I am on my own which is whole day from 9 to 6. I will have to go back to work soon and have to put him in childcare. I would hate for someone to loose their cool with him.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For those who try the schedules and it doesn’t work out, don’t give up. My son requires a LOT of sleep at 14 mths, 10 to 13 hrs per night and two naps during day. I have to put him to bed for the night between 5:30 and 6:00! He is one of the exceptions to the rule. These were great schedules for me to get started with since he was my first child…I had no idea what I was doing like most first time moms. When I tried to keep my son up for more than 1 1/2 to 2 hrs between naps, the day would be LONG and the screaming loud. I used these as guidelines, which is what they are meant for. Thanks for the helpful info and connection with other moms!

Hi! I have a 6 week old baby girl! She has a 3 hour schedule during the day most of the time around; 7, 10, 1, 4, 7 then dream feed at 10:30. After that, she wakes again around 2-3. When should I start to ween her off of the 2-3 feeding? And, how do I do that? I think she is going through a growth spurt this week so things are a little off. Hopefully, after the growth spurt things will start moving forward. Also, I am having problems getting her to nap during the day. She will go to sleep for 15-45 minutes then wake again (not crying, but fussy). Do I leave her in her crib/rock her? LOVE the blob!

I have a couple questions. My baby is 6 weeks old, so I’ve been trying to move from the 4wk to 6 wk schedule. I tried dropping the 9 o’clock cluster feed, because he doesn’t wake up for it, but I’m pretty sure we just went through a growth spurt, so I had to add it in. He also gets a dream feed at 11, wakes up anywhere btw 1-3 and 4-6.
1. So he’s been eating 9 times a day, if I drop the 9 it’ll only be 8 times, so does that mean he’ll be less likely to drop a MON feed? I’m not sure what to do there.
2. He doesn’t eat as much as I’d like at his dream feed either, even when I have skipped the cluster feed, any advice?
3. Also, my bigger problem, occasionally he has slept until 6…what do I do? I need our day to start at 7 for when I go back to work. Thanks for your help!

Hi…. New mom here. My baby just turned 7 weeks yesterday. Unfortunately, I have already started instilling some bad habits in her, such as feeding her not only when hungry, but fussy, as this will usually chill her out and get her to fall asleep. Which leads me to my next bad habit of holding baby when she naps as it is the only way she will stay asleep for longer than 5-10 mins. In my arms, she will sleep 30-60 mins, or longer sometimes. I would love to start an EASY schedule with her, but what is the point if in the end, I don’t get to enjoy the Y (me) time? I never get anything done (except catch up on my Netflix queue)! But I want baby to sleep so I hold her. Is it to late to start new habits? How do I get her to nap outside my arms? Swing doesnt always work. And yrs. I swaddle. At night, she sleeps fine in her Taggies sleeper, its just during the day for NAPS…. Please help.

Hi noobmommy!! I was wondering if the routine still works if my month old feeds 10mins at a time; which means during the feeding period activity is going on between feeds to keep her awake (there is normally 10min gap between the feeds) and then she will sleep those couple of hours…

Hi ! You’re website is amazing – I love it so much and thanks for sharing your tips. I have a quick question for your 6wk – 4 mo cheat sheet. I don’t really understand what happens between 4-7? After the feed at 4, you let the baby take a cat nap for 40 min. Then what happens until the next feed at 7 pm?
My baby is now 2 months old and was generally following a 3 hr easy routine except I try to get him to sleep in a bit in the morning til 9 am which might mean hes napping too much? he hasnt been able to go longer than 3 hours without a night feed and often wakes up in between often and needs to be shh patted / paci before he can fall back asleep. So far weve been waking every 1-3 hours at night! going crazy!!! appreciate your thoughts! thanks!
Noob Mommy says
Rachel – Congrats on your new little noob! Glad you found my blog! Please subscribe so we can keep in touch 🙂 After the catnap, you can proceed with your bedtime routine and just some quiet calm-down “activity.” As part of your bedtime/winddown routine, you can read some books, sing some songs, relax on a blanket, baby massage, and start bathtime. Basically, the cat nap is a brief nap pretty much right before dinner and bedtime. Then after the dinner…it’s bedtime! As for sleeping in till 9 am – It sounds like your little one is probably sleeping right into his first morning nap. Not a big deal, but eventually you may want to move wake time a little earlier so it doesn’t shift your whole schedule too much. At 2 months, it’s very typical to still wake every 3 hours for feeding at night until his sleep patterns stabilize by the 3rd month. Remember to keep swaddling tightly, use a paci if needed with some white noise. The swaddling really worked miracles for us the 2nd time around when we stuck with it!

This blog has been a lifesaver. We have been following the bw schedule since about 3 months and it has made life so much easier. It taught me how to read my baby’s signals, predict when he will be hungry and when he will be sleepy. We are now trying to introduce solids as well as transition over to the 6-9 mo sched but are finding it difficult to drop the dream feed…anyone have any suggestions? I am thinking of increasing his bottles to 8 oz but he sometimes won’t even finish the 7 oz he gets now so not sure if that is even the issue. Any advice would be appreciated. I was hoping to see a big difference in his sleeping habits once we started him on solids but so far that is not the case 🙁
I also have him in the habit of being rocked to sleep…totally my bad on that one…I just love doing it but i know it’s not good in the long run….any suggestions has to how I can break this habit?

Love your website! answers so many questions but of course i have a few more…
i am using the 3 hour easy with my 2 month old and am not sure what to do after 5 catnap…we don’t give her a bath every night either and this seems to be most fussy time but she usually won’t fall asleep until 8:00 sometimes later (usually try for 7:30). any suggestions?
if we miss the 8 bedtime completely (with holidays coming up) should i let her sleep later in the AM or wake her up anyway at 7am?
thanks!

First of all I have to admit that I reall like the book, it is very logical to me. My baby boy is just getting 7 weeks old on this Wednesday. Although I like the book and the EASY schedule, but I still have some questions! I hope somebody can help me.
So as the schedule says (if I am right):
1. E- Eat
2. A – Activity
3. S – Sleap
(4=3 in time this is equal )
So the rutine is the following right?
…. E – A – S – E – A – S … and again…
But what happens, if after SLEAP not the EATING is coming but a little bit of Activity and only then the EATING, for example, he had sleap well enough or he can just not go back to sleeap but he does not seam to be hungry at all and he is happly playing in his bad… Should I give him foood even if the last Eating was at 4 and it is noly 5:30 or should I play with him… and then give the food ….?
And normally according the cycle, after SLEAP comes EATING right? And what if according time wise he should eat, but he does not show any sign of being hungry at all… (He ate at 4:00 to 4:30 and he played from 4:30 to 5:45 and Sleaped from 5:45 to 7:00 and now he is not hungry at all, what should we do , …)
Generally I understand the cycle but what happens under special circumstances…. for example yesterday we went to wisit Grany and it took us two hours drive… We left right after eating, and he should have played in the car, but he falled asleap almost inmediately when we started the journey… and he has slepped all way , and woke up hungry… 🙂
Unfortunately I have started to read the BOOK only around the time he became 4 weeks old…
So by that time we have already had our OWN RUTINES by night and by morning, so now the cycle we are following is a little bit different, it is a mixture of the two…
THIS WAS ONE OF OUR DAY FOR EXAMPLE: (startning at previous night)
20:30-03:30 SLEAPING
03:30-03:45 EATING
03:45-07:00 SLEAPING
07:00-07:30 EATING
07:30-08:30 SLEAPING
08:30-09:30 PLAYING ALONE
09:30-10:00 PLAYING WITH DADY
10:00-10:10 CHANGING THE NAPPY
10:10-10:30 EATING
10:30-11:30 PLAYING
11:30- 12:20 SLEAPING
12:20-12:30 CHANGING THE NAPPY
12:30-13:00 EATING
13:00-14:15 PLAYING
14:15-16:00 GOING OUT TO WALK IN THE FRESH AIR = SLEAPING
16:00-16:15 CHANGING THE NAPPY
16:15-16:45 EATING
16:45-17:45 PLAYING
17:45-18:25 SLEAPING
18:25-18:30 CHANGING THE NAPPY
18:30-19:00 EATING
19:00-19:30 PLAYING
19:30-19:50 BATH TIME WITH DADY
19:50-20:10 EATING
20:10-03:00 SLEAPING ALONE
Playing is always half time alone, half time with us, mainly looking around and smiling to the world 🙂
What is your opinion? IS it good like this because the baby already knows what will happen or should I change some how?
Sorry for the long writing, and for the grammar but I am for HUNGARY , BUDAPEST…
Viszont a kialakult esti rutinunk a következ? …

My baby boy is just about 3 months. He only takes 30-45 min naps during the day unless I hold him. He is also eating every 2-2.5 hrs (BF). How do I adjust the easy schedule to accommodate this pattern? He is definitely eating a lot so I’m not sure why he is still eating do frequently. I think part of it may be bc he wants to suck and won’t take a pacifier and I can’t tell when he wants to suck to soothe vs when he wants to eat. He also won’t take a bottle anymore and wakes up after every 2-3 hrs at night (regardless of whether he is in his crib or our bed).

Hi…love your website. Inam reading the Baby Wisperer but like having your site as a quick refence to the main points. I have been dying to ask a few questions to someone who uses the EASY method. First off, above you have a schedule for a baby starting at four weeks but then you say to not even worry about a schedule for babies under two to three months. Can you please clarify when you can start using a schedule. My baby is only 2 1/2 weeks old but i am anxious to get her started on a routinen as soon as i can so i can know when it is best to take her on outings. I know right niw is too early, i’m just thinking ahead. My next question is how do you keep your baby on the schedule? For instance, if she sleeps past the three hour feeding time should i wake her? How do i convince her its nap time? By putting her in her crib? I still have a lot to learn but just wondering about these questions. Thanks for all the great info.

Dear Noob Mommy:
Thank you heaps for creating this site. As a fellow teacher, I was losing my mind as my tightly wound life spun out of control with my Noobie. I love and have been using the BW schedule for the past 6 weeks, and it has saved our lives and sanity. My one quick question, as we transition into the 4 months and up schedule—If we do not do the dream feed, how many ounces does baby get at each feeding to ensure that he is eating enough (getting enough calories, etc.)? He currently eats 5 oz. five times a day per the BW Newborn – 4 months schedule. If we cut his feedings down to four feedings, does that mean that we gradually work toward feeding him 8 oz. per feeding — which would be 32 oz. per day? I guess the anal, controlling teacher in me needs to know. I would love your insight and experience with this upcoming schedule. Thank you again; I am so grateful for your perspective, wisdom, and humor!

Teresa,
I am having the same issue with my almost 4 month old. I am working on slowly transitioning him. He gets 6 oz 5 times a day (on the current schedule) but if we drop a feeding as we transition to eating every 4 hours, it is not enough. I don’t dream feed as he is sleeping through the night. What did you decide to do? Any input would help!
Thanks!
Alissa

We just kind of rode the whole thing out. To be specific, our little one does not eat during the night. So, he eats every 3-4 hours during the day. He is now 6 1/2 months old, and his schedule looks something like this:
7- Wake, eat, play
8:30-10:30/11 – Nap
10:30/11- Wake, eat, play
12:30/1 – 2:30 – Nap
2:30 – Wake, eat, play
4:30-5:00 – Catnap
5:00 – Wake, eat, play
6:15 – Bath, bottle, in bed usually between 7:10-7:40 or so
As you can see, there are five feedings in this schedule. He eats 8 oz. the first 3 meals, and then 6 oz. the final two meals. We have also (as of this week) begun introducing solids–which he eats a few teaspoons in the two morning meals. Hope that this is helpful. I searched and found very little info on the BW schedule (not using a dream feed). The final meal is always a gamble; he’s so tired and sometimes he eats the whole 6 oz. and sometimes not. We are at the point of SLOWLY eliminating that third catnap, but it’s a slow process. We kind of allowed Wally to establish his OWN schedule, and we took into account that he only likes to be awake around 2 hours. Good luck!!!

I have started the EASY method and think its rather simple, but there are no options for babies with reflux! I have had a hard time trying to get the required amount of A-ctivity in because after I feed baby, I have to spend a good amount of time burping her which requires me to hold her on my chest for a good 20-30 minutes. End result is a sound sleeping baby. With the EASY method in mind, I get no Activity/play time in really. Has anyone had any luck with getting a reflux baby on a sleep schedule?

I was wondering the same thing! My baby also has reflux so nap times typically follow feedings. We get very little sleep at night now. He’s only 6 weeks so I’m not too concerned about it at this point, but I definitely want to get him on a good sleep schedule when he’s ready.

I’m looking at the 3 hour EASY and notice you have nothing on the schedule between 11pm and 7am. What happens during those hours? Our 7 week old baby is not sleeping for 8 hours thru the night.
Thanks!

Thanks for the post! My daughter is 5 and 1/2 months. We have been following this routine for about a week now ( I was nursing on demand but once I read The Baby Whisperer and realized she should be able to go w/o a feeding for 4 hours after 4 months it has gotten so much easier). As far as the cluster feedings go, it says to only do if they are goign through a growth spurts. How do you know if they are going through one?

Thanks for posting this, but I have a quick question. My baby (5 months and 1 wk old) will only sleep for 45 minutes during nap times. We used the Ferber method and now we are down to 1 (sometimes 2) nighttime feedings and we are pretty happy with that, but we can’t get him to sleep more that 45 minutes, so he takes 5 naps a day! He will only be happy being awake for about 60-90 minutes before he looses his cool and just becomes a major grump, whining, fussing, rubbing his eyes… how do you suggest following a “EASY” schedule when he won’t take a good nap? We still try to do the Eat/Play/Sleep pattern, but it’s hard because he eats every 3 hours, but oftentimes that runs into the middle of a nap! I will give you an example of how our mornings usually go:
7:00am- Wake and feed
7:30-8:30- Play (activity)
8:30-9:15- Nap
9:15-10:00 – Play
10:00-10:15- Feed
10:15-10:45- Play
10:45-11:30- Nap
We have tried letting him CIO when he wakes up, but he never falls back asleep… I am just not sure what to do! Help, please!

Hi Ali:
Did you ever get any feedback on this. I know your baby is out of this phase now, but did the naps correct themself?
Thanks!

I was also wondering what advice you got/ or have now that you may be out of this phase. My little one is 6 months, he sleeps 11-12 hours at night. He lay him down awake for bedtime and naps, bedtime is awesome! Naps he will fall asleep on his own but will only sleep for a half hour, unless someone is napping with him then its longer. ONCE in a great while he will sleep longer for naps in his crib but it’s very rare.
any advice would be nice, Thansks!

This is awesome!!!! I first found your blog when I was using EASY with #1. I’m expecting #2 in the summer and am definitely going to be using this handy dandy cheat sheet. Thanks so much!
