Back when I was teaching, we had computer lab once a week where students had the opportunity to access the internet, play educational games, type reports, conduct research, and take math and reading quizzes. It was probably my kids’ favorite day of the week. It’s amazing how interactive technology can turn around even the most unmotivated child. It’s a win-win for the teacher and the students, so long as you have a plan.
The question is, how do you introduce your noob to technology at home without the content being too childish, too challenging, gimmicky, or just plain brain dribble? Sure there are tons of websites out there that offer free games for kids, but so many of them are just glorified arcade games – mindnumbing and repetitive. These websites can babysit your noob, but they aren’t really encouraging your child to practice the skills they learn at home or in school.
Hey, don’t get me wrong… I love me some Bejeweled and Zoomba, but I also appreciate a game that can make me think. And you know what they say … kids’ brains are like sponges … they’re filled with holes 🙂
I had the opportunity to try out Jumpstart.com, a 3D virtual world for kids ages 3-10, as well as a game on CD from the same award-winning company, Knowledge Adventure. Both the website and CD have “The 3 E’s” (the special ingredients that help a child learn) — they’re entertaining, engaging, and educational!
So what’s in it for you? Well, I’m giving away one free 3-month membership to Jumpstart.com (which normally costs $7.99/mo)! All you have to do is leave me a comment and an email address for me to reach you at by Wed, April 8th 12:00 pm PST. I will randomly select a lucky winner.
Here are a few things I found valuable from the website and game:
- Kids get to create an Avatar (which kids love to do almost as much as adults)
- Games review math and reading skills, and character traits such as friendship and sharing.
- Kids practice using the mouse, keyboard, and other coordination skills they’ll need later on in school for technology standards.
- Parents can personalize the experience with parental controls and special rewards.
- Audio narration helps those still acquiring language.
- The website offers a blog, tips, and discussion board for parents.
- Even non-members can access some limited features
So don’t forget to enter! Just leave me a comment and an email address by Wed, April 8th 12:00 pm PST. Happy gaming!
